无上甚深微妙法 百千万劫难遭遇
我今见闻得受持 愿解如来真实义
请放掌，今天我们的讲题是「为何佛教最棒」。
For today's theme of our topic is：Why Buddhism is the best？
我讲这个题目的因缘，是因为五年前，二零一二年七月的时候。
The reason why l am presenting this theme，the occasion is that because five years ago，in July 2012。
我在底特律对外公开讲经，讲题为「金刚经英汉双语讲座」。
When l was making a public preaching，on the Dharma and the topic was，「the Diamond Sutra——」，「an English-Chinese Bilingual commentary」。
那时有位老美听众问了一个问题。
At that time，there was an American audience，He raised a question，he asked。
他说：所有的宗教都说，他们的宗教是最棒的，而你们佛教也说你们是最棒的，请问你能够告诉我：为什麽佛教是最棒的？
He asked：「All the religions say they are the best，and Buddhism also says that they are the best，Can you tell me why Buddhism is the best？」。
当时，我告诉他，你这个问题听来很简单，但其实是一个非常复杂的问题。
At that time，lreplied to him that，your question sounds ostensibly simple on hearing，but actually，it is a very complicated and difficult question。
因为这个问题，牵涉到所有的宗教，以及「比较宗教学」的问题。
Because this issue involves all the religions，as well as the comparative religions。
而且其比较可能是无量的。
And the comparisons could be infinite。
而要回答到今你听得明白，而且赞同我的说法。
Besides，in order to make you understand clearly，and assentto my answer。
至少必须涵盖当今世界上好几个最昌盛、最普遍的重要宗教。
My answer should be able to encompass，quite a few most prominent and prevalent religions，in the world right now。
而且也需具体举出各宗教的优缺点。
And it should be able to make substantial，factual reference to the merits，and demerits of each religion。
因而显现出佛教的优胜处。
So as to elicit and present palpably，the superior merits of Buddhism。
才能令人心服，而非三言两语、一厢情愿的自我肯定。
So as to make you convinced instead of，simply making a few words of self-assertions，with wishful thinking。
因此，我打算从下回起，作一系列的演说。
Therefore，l plan from next time，l will be making a series of lectures。
来好好回答你这个问题。
In order to respond well to your question。
因此在下个月的讲经会前。
Therefore，prior to the assembly forthe Dharma，in the next month。
我就准备好了这份讲稿。
I had made ready this speech。
并且开始讲，共连续讲了两次。
and had actually begun to present it，and successively for two times。
但由于时间所限没有讲完。
But due to the limitation of the time，I did not finish the speech。
这一次由于因缘成熟，我便准备重新讲过。
And right now，this time，as the occasion is approaching，So l plan to redo this again.，Redo this presentation。
但由于上次讲经的地点是在美国。
But owing to the location of the lecture last time，is in the US。
客随主便，我便以地主国的语言英语为主。
Therefore，in honor of the host country，I took English as the primary language。
先说英语，后说中文。
Followed by Chinese translation。
也因为原讲稿是这么安排的，所以我为了方便起见，还是照原来的方式来作。
As the original speech was arranged in this way，So for convenience's sake，I plan to follow the original process，That is to speak English first，and followed by the Chinese rendition。
以下便开始讲这个，看来简单而讲来困难、复杂，而且十分重要的论题。
As follows，l am going to speak about，this seemingly simple and easy，but actually very difficult and complicated issue，and also it is a very significant and important theme，in all religions and philosophies，Now the topic，All religions say they are the best，but why Buddhism is the best？
所有的宗教都说他们是最棒的，而佛法为什么是最棒的？，
Foreword。前言。
Let me begin，in the first place，by making a little preamble（前言），when Iheard you asked this question，I had aheart-felt sympathy with you。
当我听到你问这个问题的时候，我当时就「心有戚戚焉」，「心有戚戚焉」，我把它翻译成I had aheart-felt sympathy 。
because in the past ，I also had roamed ，in，arious spiritual and ifitellectual reainis，in various spintual and intellectual realms。
因为在以前，我也曾经流浪于各种不同的，精神以及知识的领域里。
yearning for a solid spot，for the peace and repose of my unrestful mind and soul。
渴望一个安心立命之所。
l have tried deeply all the possibilities，which were open to me in religions，and philosophies，both eastern and western。
我也很努力地深入，各种可能得到的机会，去追求宗教以及哲学，不论是东方的，还是西方的。
I tried not desultorily and perfunctorily，but very sincerely and diligently。
我那时候的努力，不是说只是如蜻蜓点水一般，或是溪尝辄止，而是非常的虔诚而且努力，顺便写一下，这个我本来原稿是英文写的，但是我翻中文的时候就这样翻，Desultorily我把它翻成蜻蜓点水，英文原稿是desultorily，中文我就翻成蜻蜓点水，因为desultorily是这里碰一下，那里碰一下，然后perfunctory就像蜻蜓点水一样，是不是？perfunctory就好像尽责任的样子，就好像洗脸不好好洗，小孩子一样随便抹一抹，敷衍塞责那样的意思，我把它翻成浅尝辄止，这个也是顺便显示一下说，不只是中翻英困难，英翻中也不是简单，你不能这样死译、直译，对不对？，你要把那个精神跟意义翻(译)出来，不是一个字对一个字，要不然你把「蜻蜓点水」翻译成英文，就把蜻蜓给弄出来了，那老美怎么能看得懂。
I read voraciously and widely，practiced avidly，joined groups of all sorts。
我如饥如渇地阅读，而且广泛地阅读，很热切地修学，而且参加了各种团体。
l became a regular member of a Baptist Group。
我参加了一个浸信会，叫做附中团契，它是浸信会的团体，在信义路。in my high school days for one whole yea。
我参加这个会一整年。
trying very hard to become a Christian。
我很努力地想要成为一个基督教徒，因为那时候深深地觉得，心裹面要有一个依靠、要有一个信仰，所谓追求一个信仰，很努力的，不是只是参加团契就好了。
which is in Taipei，I went to various Taoist temples，trying very hard to become a Christian，I sang hymns with them，prayed with them，I read and studied the Bible，both in chinese and English。
我跟他们一起唱圣歌，跟他们一起祈祷，我阅读以及研究耶教圣经，读中文的、中文版的，以及英文版的，当我读大学的时候，我就读最权威的詹姆士王版(King dames Version)，那是最权威，也最优美的文字的英文圣经。
I was once moved to tears，by the Sermon on the Mount。
我有一次甚至于被山上训词感动到流涙，这个是耶稣讲的，山上训词，这个是耶稣讲的山上剞词。
Later，l also attended Mass，in a Catholic church in Taipei。
后来，我又去参加了，新生南路的一个天主堂，叫作「灵粮堂」，去参加望弥撒，总而言之，这个就是要填充心灵的饥渴。
I went to various taoist temples to pray with my mother。
我还陪着我妈妈，到过好几个道教的庙去烧香。
I also tried to become an adherent，and strong supporter of a new sect of Taoist，called the Heavenly Holy Mother。
我还甚至于很想要，变成一个新的道教的信仰，叫作「天上圣母」的忠实信徒。
founded by my eldest sister，who acted as a Medium or psychic。
这一个天上圣母这个小道堂呢，是我的大姐，她神灵附体，所谓的，然后就创立了这一个，然后她就是里面的，就是乩童嘛。
I studied Confucianism，including the whole of the Four Books。
我研习儒书，包括儒家的四书，《大学》、《中庸》、《论语》、《孟子》。
and actually practiced it faithfully，and then lstudied and practiced on Mencius，Ch'an Buddhism，Lao-tzu，Chuang-tz。
老子、庄子、易经，尼采、苏格拉底柏拉图，尼采、苏格拉底，柏拉图、罗素，富兰克林、胡适、杜威等等，我研读了四书，而且还真正地、很忠实地跟着去修学，就包括：孟子，还有襌宗，还有老子、庄子、易经，尼采、苏格拉底、柏拉图、罗素（Bertrand Russell），Franklin（富兰克林）、胡适、 and John Dewey（约翰·杜威）。
I studied four sets of books on，the History of philosophy。
我研读了、很仔细地研读了四套哲学史。
and appreciated each philosopher，and their philosophies，which one is bette。而且很欣赏每一个哲学家以及他们的哲学。
but was unable to determine。
但是我读完了整个哲学史以后，对于这所有的哲学家跟哲学呢，我没有辨法决定哪一个比较好，为什么？因为还没开窍，所以你看起来都很好。
Now with the help of practicing Buddha's Teaching，l have gradually come to the discernment of all those great learnings with a distinct conviction。
而现在由于得到修行佛法，如来圣教的帮助，因此呢，我就渐渐地能够了别，这一些伟大的学问以及哲学、宗教等的优缺点，而心里面有一个「决定信」，决定的看法。
Therefore，l am speaking to you，not in the capacity of a religious teacher。因此呢，我现在跟你讲话的时候，不是站在我是一个宗教教师的立场。
but rather as a Fellow-Traveller，who has traversed the lands，that some of you are treading。
而是以一个旅伴，行旅之伴，他曾经经过了很多的土地、地方，那些地方呢，你们正在进行，正在其中进行。
and who would present his findings to you。
而且呢，他就要，他就是我啦，把他的发现告诉你们，呈现给你们。
so that it may assist you in one way or another，to reach your destination as soon as possible。
以期能够帮助你们，以种种的方式呢，能够达到你们要追求的目标，越快越好。
This question seems to sound so simple，but in fact it is highly complicated and difficult。
你这个问题呢，听起来是很简单，但事实上呢，它是非常、高度的复杂以及困难。
In addition，to my knowledge，a good many people do share the same doubt。除此以外，就我所知的范围之内，有很多的人也有同样的疑问。
什么疑问？所有的宗教都说他们是好的、最好的，而为什么佛教是最好的呢？甚至于，就是说，有很多人讲说，所有的宗教都是劝人做好事，都是好的，但是为什么佛教是最好的 ？这一个，这一篇演说呢，就是要告诉你为什么佛教是最好的，那有这样子疑问的人包括。tincluding Buddhist clergy and lay people，那就包括了佛教的出家人，跟在家居士，都有，连佛教的出家人也没有辨法，没有办法真正很肯定、决定说：「佛教最棒」。
and it would pose as a significant hindrance，forone's unreserved total integration，with active practice in full swing。
而且呢，它这一个疑问，会造成一个很重大的障难，什麽障难呢？它能够阻碍我们这个，毫无保留的投入，以及全力地、积极地修行，假如你没有能够决断地知道，决定说「佛教最棒」，你就没有这样子的能量。
Therefore，l think it，Therefore，l think it，imperative and quite rewarding。因此呢，我认为，这是个非常急切而且有价值的。
if we could cope with it now，and get it clarified sooner。
如果我们能够现在就对付它，而且把它理清，就(是)越快越好。
whereby we could really，get underway with the practice。
从而呢，我们可以真正地正式上路，开始修行，这叫(作)正修行，而不是结缘修行了。
In the meantime，this question obviously belongs to ，the sphere of Comparative Religion。
同时呢，我要指出说，这个问题很明显的是属于比较宗教学的领域。
and as such lmust perforce endeavor to tackle it，if we are really going to deal with it at al。
因此呢，我也就必须要把它当作，是一个比较宗教学的问题，而尽力地去硬碰硬地面对它。英文这个字tackle，橄榄球，它不是开始的时候，大家都趴下来，然后撞吗？然后有一个人从两队人马中间投过去，然后大家互相撞啊，然后把对方撞倒，把球抢到，这样子，所以那个叫作tackle，那我们台湾人或是日本人叫作タックル(Takkuru），就是好像牛撞牛一样啊，我把它翻（译）成「硬碰硬面对」。所以这个是毫无取巧的，一定要硬碰硬的，タックル(Takkuru）。所以我就必须要努力地、尽力地、硬碰硬地面对它，
if we are really going to deal with it at all。
假如我们真正想要，正式地去处理这个问题的话，那就必须要硬碰硬、面对面，不能退缩、不能逃避的意思。
So，here we go。
所以，以下就是本论，但英文说So，here we go，你不能说：「好，现在我们来吧」，这样翻译就太土了吧。
好，第二节
A General Comparison between，Buddhism and Other Religions。
世界各种宗教的比较，这是比较那个原则。
 第一个A comparison of religions。First，other religions，其他宗教。
Deism就是神论，然后Mono-Deism就是「一神论」，Multi-Deism就是「多神论」，一神论就是犹太教、耶稣教、还有回教，这叫一神论。多神论呢？是其他所有宗教都是多神论。一神论是Worshiping a god or gods for His Grace，就是崇拜上帝以求其恩典，就拜神啦，简单一句话啦。那你说拜上帝、拜耶稣跟拜关公一样不一样？其实是一样的，也就是什么？求关公或是天上圣母，或是妈祖保佑我嘛，让我发财啊，等等啊，是不是？求上帝也是一样，所以你们不要以为说，这个基督教是很先进的，是是很高级的宗教，因为他们科学发达，不是，他们的宗教一样的很原始，你知道吗 ？而且不但原始还野蛮，所以他们，你拜妈祖娘娘跟拜耶稣是完全一样的，就是求求求，这样子而已。
然后，佛教呢，Buddhism is neither Deism，or Atheism，nor anti-theism，这个Deism怎么来的？Deism是从拉丁文deo来的，deo是意思就是神，所以英文的那个神教就是deo，把那个o去掉，改成ism。Mono是「一」，Deisms是「神」，所以叫一神。这个multi是「多」，那一样，多神论。然后这个Atheism是什么？a就是not的意思，没有，所以就是无神论者，像唯物主义者、唯物论者，那种种，很多这种，还有很多断灭论者都是无神论者，叫做Atheism，然后或是anti-theism，就是反神论，像尼采就是反神论的，他不只是无神论，而是反神论，他写的很多书都是要，他们称为诋毁，诋毁上帝这样子，然后Practicing Buddha's holy teaching ，所以佛法不是有神论，也不是无神论，也不是反神论，那到底佛法对神的看法是什么？那或者这么问，大家很多人可能也有这个问题啦，我们既然学佛、拜佛，但是我们不拜神，对不对？那我们承不承认有神？佛法承不承认有神？有神，但是我们不尝拜他，你知道吗？因为我们无所求，我们不求神，我们可以求佛加佑，但是不能求神，所以就好像，这个世间有名利等等，五欲啊，五欲有没有？有，可是这个修行人不求五欲是一样的意思，所以有与没有跟求不求，以他为尊，是两回事，所以有神论、无神论或者多神论、一神论，这些都是世间人的想法，这些都世间人的这个妄想。那佛法就是说因为你自己自心有所求，所以就要求一个东西出来这样的，那么所以佛法知道有神，就好像佛法知道有众生，但是我们不是要求众生，不是，还是要说求生为众生。也就是说，譬如说，我们俗语讲说「我来世做人的时候怎么样」，但是佛教徒就不能这样讲了，你来世，希望不要再堕入轮回嘛，是不是？所以承认有六道，但是不追求六道，这样，承认有神，但是并不追求神，不求神，不依神。
So in Buddhism， It is affirmed that There are gods，But we don't supplicate the gods for mercy or bliss。practicing Buddha's holy teaching for Enlightenment。
我们这个佛教是要修学如来圣教，以求开悟，这样的，所以跟他们不一样。
那，好，第二个origin宗教的来源，start with a mythology or myth ，or folklora。一切的宗教除了佛法以外，全都是以一个 mythology(神话)开始，全都是神话，基督教是从神话来的，然后神造天地、神造万物、神造亚当、夏娃，这都是神话。这跟希腊神话也是一样，甚至于任何一个民族的神话也都是这样子，乃至于中国文化里面也有神话，也有盘古开天辟地、女娲补天，对不对？然后这个金母娘娘等等，这些都是神话，这是道教的东西，乃至于儒家的，女娲的那个算是也是儒家的，对不对？好，都是神话，或者是民间传说、民间故事，而都把它当以为真。
The origins of all religions except Buddhism come from and start with a mythology or a myth，or folklore 。
所以那都是信不得的。 譬如说基督教里面也有很多神话，一开始就神话，那后面还有很多神话。

那佛教的起源是什么呢？佛教的来源。所以我讲这什么？我们先讲这个佛教的起源。
Buddhism starts with facts of buddha's birth as a Prince in a princibility In India。
佛教开始于，从事实开始，从佛出生为太子开始，这是事实。而其他宗教全都是神话，你都无史可考，无稽可考，也就是你听了，你信不信这样子而已，而他所有的宗教到后来都是勉强人家要相信，勉强你必须要信，那你不信的话，就威胁你说要下地狱，对不对？所以都没有史实可考。
所以What I'm saying is that all the all other religions start with a mythology，which is unbelieveable。
所有其他的宗教都是从一个神话开始，所以它一开头就不可信，就无法置信。那如果你要信的话，那你就不是被强迫了，要不然就自己要求自己要信。但是佛法没有，它就很理性，它不是神话，它是实在的东西。甚至于后来这个玛利亚生耶稣，是处女生子，这跟事实不符嘛，对不对？这个与事实不合。那大家怎么会相信呢？奇怪，所以这就是很奇怪的事情，所以佛法的那个信是以知为体，你可以知，可以见，故信。那什么知跟见呢？知，我们知道释迦如来是太子，这是知。那见呢？我们可以见到所有的他的言说了，他的行迹等等，这都是事实，这都是历史。但是基督教都不是这样子，回教当然也是一样，其他都一样，乃至于道教更不用说了，对不对？好，接着讲。
All other religions，all of them Are Ego-oriented. Both guards and men And the followers alike。
所有其他宗教的都是oriented取向，Ego是自我，自我取向，也就是自我中心的意思。
Ego-oriented Is motivated by ego，by selfishness。
这样懂吗？就是以自私自利为动力，叫（作）自我取向、自我中心。不管是他们的神或是人，全都是自我取向，因为他们的神是自我取向，所以人当然也是自我取向了，对不对？但是我现在就开一个玩笑，他们的神跟人是利益挂钩，为什么要信他的神？因为有利可求，对不对？所以这是利益挂钩，对不对？那所以呢，所有的信徒也都是自我取向。
好，但是 Buddhism it based on egolessness selflessness as basis。
佛教以无我、无私为基础，而佛所做的一切也都是符合这个，所以佛跟其他宗教最不同的就是什么？我这个翻译也是神来之笔，刚刚才想到的，「如说修行」，preach as practiced。preach就是讲道、讲经，讲经的时候跟修行是一样的，所以如修行一样，所以如是说，如是行，如是行，如是说。所以佛没有说他做不到的而这样说，其他的宗教哲学、圣人全都没办法。佛所说的都是他的境界，都是他做得到的，他叫人家做的，都是他自己做到了，没有一件说，他自己没做到，或是他自己想做还没做的，叫你们先做，没有这样的事，所以如说修行。
So The difference between Buddhism and other religions，the major point is Buddha preaches as practiced，So if anything that he has not practiced，he would not say it，If anything that he teaches，that he exhorts us to do，then he has already Done it himself，Ok。But it is different from other religions，such as when god said in the Ten Commandments： 「thou shall not kill」。He Demands that men shall not kill others，but got himself kills，and he kills a lot.Right？
所以举一个例子，这个基督教里面，神说，他的十戒里面第一条：「你不应该杀人」，可是呢，他虽然这样教敕众生，但是他自己杀人，而且他杀了很多，其实他杀的特多，他杀的最多，他杀的是空前绝后的多，从来没有其他的人或者是神杀的比他更多，对不对？水淹大地七日七夜，想要把所有的一切的生物全都杀光。
So he try to kill all beings on the earth by raining seven days ，and seven nights to cause the deluge ，To inundate the earth，thereby to annihilate everything，everyone，So he is the biggest Killer。
